in Optical Fiber & Cable Industry

Sustainable Optical Fiber and Cable Industry Alliance (SOFIA) is an industry initiative focused on promoting sustainability throughout the Optical Fiber and Cable value chain through increased collaboration.

WHY SOFIA

The initiative was created to address key challenges in the sustainability of optical fibers and fiber optic cables.

 

• Create transparency and common understanding: We perceive a lack of clear information and a common understanding on the sustainability of optical fibers and fiber optic cables

 

• Improve industry communication: We aim for a more concise communication of progress towards greater sustainability in order to give stakeholders more transparency on the future development. 
   

• Develop standardized assessment: Various methods allow a more or less precise indication of the carbon content and sustainability parameters, so that there is uncertainty in the application and the resulting published values. 
   

• Accelerate transition: We aim to foster industry practices supporting a steady and controlled transition to more sustainable fiber and cable products. 

Transparency

Increase transparency on sustainability of the optical fiber and optical fiber cable industry along the value chain.

Methodology

Specify methodologies to measure sustainability aspects along the value chain. Employ product category rules for fiber preforms, optical fibers, and fiber-optic cables.

Targets & Roadmaps

Define specific sustainability targets and roadmaps towards them, including achieving climate neutrality and developing a more circular ecosystem.

Knowledge

Be the source of reference for the industry, improving intelligence on raw materials' footprints and impact of manufacturing processes, and supporting communication within the industry.
